Navigating Beauty Culture (NBC) comes to The Shames JCC on the Hudson
If you are reading this, I suspect you are a strong woman, dedicated to healing. I believe you, as I am, are driven to love your body, but perhaps have come to recognize that the body hatred was branded onto our psyches. However, the same culture that created this trap, has armed us with the tools we need to free ourselves, it’s just a matter of looking in the right places.
My mom likes to tell me, that I first studied Feminism in her lap, while she nursed me through her Consciousness Raising Groups. I continued the studies in high school and college. I read Gloria Steinem, Naomi Wolf and Susan Faludi while my closest girlfriends developed eating disorders and I tried desperately to counsel them, while struggling with my own body dysmorphia. At Reed College, in Portland OR, I was fortunate enough to be largely reprogrammed while studying Women’s Self-Defense from fierce female Pukulan masters and a humbling cadre of powerful rugby players, dancers and poets at an eating disorder support group.
Once I became a therapist, I saw that the fight continues onto this generation. I formed the Navigating Beauty Culture (NBC) as a hybrid of Feminist Theory study group and body positivity support group.
We are going to begin sharing the NBC love with the teens (Ages 13-18) of Shames JCC on the Hudson. We will still be partnering with Trilogy in Tarrytown and Amethyst Integrative Wellness in White Plains, but are trying to find the right times and locations to meet the needs of group members.
