Family's Here...to Stay: When Extended Family Moves In
There are a lot of advantages to having extended family close at hand (it takes a village!), but it would be helpful to understand that it will also bring some challenges. Here are some tips for mindfully navigating a smooth transition.
1. Self-Compassion - Be mindful of the fact that, for this enterprise, the blessings may be equal to the challenges. Give yourself a break if you are feeling anxious about the households merging.
2. Nuclear Family Meeting - While the move-in is still in the planning phase, meet separately with your current household for the purposes of exploring their hopes and fears about this chage. All feelings should be welcome. Simply being heard does wonders for the alleviation of stress.
3. Establish Ground Rules - This is family, you obviously don't want to come across as unwelcoming, or rigid, but it's important everyone has all the facts. Perhaps your partner generally take the dog for a last walk at midnight, or the neighbors kids ring the doorbell at 7am. The new members of the household should know what sounds and movements they might experience and at what hours. Perhaps mentally follow yourself around as you move through the space and chart your patterns. No one wants to be in any one's way and respecting each other's space will add to the harmonious longevity of this union!
